Struggling outdoors, so you don't have to

Meet The Team
Who are we and why should you care?
Our
Story
We are the Neuro Traverse family.
A West Sussex based family who are navigating various neurodivergences between us.
Our Boy was diagnosed with Autism at 4 years old, though like many parents, we were vibing with it long before his formal diagnosis.
His diagnosis did not come as a surprise to us, a relief that we didn't have to fill in any more bloody forms, but not a surprise. What caught us off guard was when the specialist said, "What you often find with autistic children is one or both parents may be autistic or have autistic traits." At which point Dad and I looked at each other and went, "Yeah, that checks out."
Neither Dad nor I have ever had any sort of assessment or diagnosis for a neurological condition, nor do we think we will at this stage. It feels a bit like arranging a Health & Safety assessment for the Titanic at this point. We both have however, grown up with a strong sense that we didn't fit, not just socially and emotionally, but that we just couldn't physically function in the same way others seemed to be able to. It was as if life were an operating system and everyone in our lives was various models of PC able to run it. Whereas we were toasters, just shrugging at it and gathering crumbs.
As a child, I didn't eat various foods due to texture. I had to analyse every action before I took it in the presence of other humans, I missed social cues, I did not react appropriately to many situations and cried all the time.
It's a cliché, but it's true to say that neurodivergence just wasn't a "thing" back then. It was just categorised as shyness, fussiness, being difficult, making a scene, etc.
Dad and I have both worked very hard over our respective 30+ years to build up our confidence and self-acceptance with who we are and being happy that we do things the way we do them.
A process that was accelerated in August 2012, when we finally found each other. ❤️
We married in October 2015, and bought our first house the following year. We looked around our home and decided we didn't like our paperwork being intact, our evenings being ambient, and our meals not being closely observed by a third party. So we adopted...
Dog ❤️
Throughout this time, we had been struggling with fertility issues, which resulted in us undergoing IVF treatment in 2019. Our very first attempt resulted in a successful pregnancy, more than successful in fact! It resulted in the greatest human being who ever lived (indisputable)
Boy ❤️
So now, here we are.
Four toasters trying to open a Word document, and having a lovely time doing so.
